Discover Your Personality Type: The Essential Introduction to the Enneagram (Revised and Expanded Edition)

What is the Enneagram and how can it help you?

The Enneagram is a personality classification system that describes nine fundamental types, each with its own motivations, fears, and behavioral patterns. This book, written by renowned experts Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson, offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to this model. Unlike other approaches, the Enneagram does not only describe superficial traits, but delves into the internal dynamics that drive our actions. Knowing your type can provide valuable insight into your strengths and areas for growth, facilitating a path towards self-knowledge and personal improvement.

Benefits of knowing your personality type

Identifying your Enneagram type can be a powerful tool for personal development. It helps you understand why you react in certain ways to stress, how you relate to others, and what limiting patterns may be repeating in your life. Many readers have found that this knowledge allows them to improve their relationships, make decisions more aligned with their true nature, and reduce internal conflicts. Furthermore, the Enneagram offers a map for growth: each type has a path of development towards healthier versions of themselves. This book, in particular, has been praised for its clarity and depth, becoming a reference resource for those new to the study of the Enneagram.

How is this book different from others on the Enneagram?

What distinguishes "Understanding Your Personality Type" is its practical and comprehensive approach. It includes a carefully designed forced-choice personality test that guides you step-by-step to accurately identify your type. The authors, Riso and Hudson, are recognized authorities in the field, and this revised and expanded edition incorporates the latest advances in Enneagram understanding. The descriptions of each type are detailed and nuanced, and variations within each type (wings, levels of development) are explored. In addition, the book offers personal growth advice specific to each type. Readers highlight that, unlike Myers-Briggs, the Enneagram provides a more dynamic and transformative understanding of personality.

Who is this book for?

This book is aimed at anyone interested in self-knowledge and psychology. No prior knowledge of the Enneagram is required; the work is intended as an essential introduction. It is especially useful for coaches, therapists, human resources professionals, and team leaders who wish to better understand interpersonal dynamics. It is also an excellent tool for psychology students or for those seeking a serious and well-founded resource for their personal growth. Whether you are new to the Enneagram or already have experience, this book will offer you new perspectives.

How to use it: how to make the most of the test and descriptions

To make the most of this book, it is recommended to complete the personality test included. Take your time to answer honestly; the authors suggest that it may take several days to reflect on the questions. Once your probable type has been identified, read the corresponding description and also explore neighboring types (wings) to refine your understanding. The book also includes sections on the levels of development (healthy, average, and unhealthy) that will help you assess your degree of integration. You can use this knowledge as a starting point for deeper personal development work, either individually or with the guidance of a professional.

Frequently asked questions about the Enneagram

Does the Enneagram have a scientific basis?

While the Enneagram is not an empirically validated psychological model in its entirety, it has been widely used in personal and professional development contexts. Many psychologists consider it a useful tool for reflection and self-knowledge, although it should not be confused with a clinical diagnosis.

Can my type change over time?

The Enneagram holds that the basic type is fixed, but levels of development and wings can change. Personal growth allows for healthier aspects of the type to manifest, while stress can lead to less adaptive patterns.

Does this book only include the test or also theoretical information?

It includes both the complete test and detailed descriptions of each type, along with a theoretical introduction to the concepts of the Enneagram. It is a complete resource to get started.
